Workout Options if You're Not Comfortable Heading Back to the Gym
As more cities move into reopening plans (and others tighten their restrictions), one of the questions we’re asked most often is, “Is it safe to go back to the gym?”
There isn’t a simple yes or no answer to this question.
If gyms and fitness studios are reopening in your city, participate however you feel safest. The most important thing to do is follow the guidelines of your city and the CDC.
Wear masks, wipe down equipment, and wash your hands — and never go to the gym or a group class if you’re feeling sick.
If you’re not comfortable heading back to the gym, we’ve got you covered. Try these four options for safe, distanced workouts that keep you fit AND healthy!
1. Train in the great outdoors.
Working out in the open is a great way to get some fresh air and sunshine, especially during COVID-19. Outdoors, it’s much easier to maintain six feet of distance. Plus, wind on a breezy day helps improve air flow — and it feels great!
You don’t need machines or complex equipment to get a good workout.
You can work out your entire body with bodyweight alone. If bodyweight workouts aren’t your speed, mix in simple, portable tools like kettlebells or clubbells. These are easy to pack into a gym bag and take to your local park or beach for a one-man bootcamp!
2. Give an at-home workout a try with a visit from your trainer.
In-home personal training is perfect for maintaining accountability while practicing safe social distancing.
Your personal trainer can drop by — mask and cleaning supplies in hand! — maintain a safe distance while you finish your session, and bring (disinfected) equipment so you don’t have to shell out for it yourself.
3. Invest in virtual personal training or group classes.
If your hesitation to head back to the gym stems from a worry about social distancing, give virtual sessions a try instead. Personal training and group classes have gone online for a wide variety of practices, from martial arts to yoga to kettlebell training and everything in between!
