Tips to Celebrate World Mental Health Day
Almost 30 years ago, World Mental Health Day was observed for the first time on October 10th. It was started as an annual activity of the World Federation for Mental Health to raise awareness about mental health issues and reduce the stigma surrounding people with mental health disorders. The celebration of this day also aims to empower people to take action because people who pay close attention to their mental health and work on improving it tend to live happier and healthier lives. Here are some excellent ways you can celebrate Mental Health Day.
Educate & Communicate
A great way to celebrate Mental Health Day is educating yourself and your loved ones about mental health issues. Read or share an article about mental health. Talk with friends and family about the stigma and debunk some myths surrounding mental health disorders. You never know who that talk might help to overcome their situation.
Nurture Your Mind & Body
Make a promise to yourself to make your mental health a priority. Regular exercise, eating healthy, meditation, counseling, volunteering, journaling, and expressing daily gratitude are just a few of the ways you can increase your well-being. At F3, our highly personalized Wellness Concierge Service is designed to help you meet all your health and wellness goals. We have customized fitness, massage therapy, and nutrition programs that can be specifically tailored to your lifestyle.
Contribute to a Cause
Everyone deserves access to support for their mental health, no matter their socioeconomic background or geographical location. Unfortunately, there are many underserved mental health organizations around the world. Most of these organizations are non-profits and run off of volunteer hours and donated funds. Donating your time or money to these organizations can go a long way to helping someone in need. Popular organizations to donate to include the National Alliance for Mental Illness, To Write Love on Her Arms, and Project Semicolon, to name a few.
Practice Random Acts of Kindness
Being kind can go a long way toward improving your emotional well-being. When you're kind to other people, you boost your sense of self-worth and happiness. Random acts of kindness can be small and not cost a thing, like holding a door for someone or leaving a positive review for a small business. You can also do larger acts of kindness like sending flowers anonymously to someone you know is struggling or paying for another customer's coffee order. No matter the size, one random act of kindness can snowball into something more significant that makes everyone's days just a little bit brighter.
Plan a Wellness Retreat
A wellness vacation allows you to maintain, enhance or kick-start a healthy lifestyle and support or increase your sense of well-being. It can include spa treatments and therapies, healthy eating and culinary events, outdoor fitness activities, and educational programs that share ways to incorporate healthy habits into our everyday lives. The Wellness Vacation can also include “voluntourism” experiences because, as mentioned above, “giving back” increases a sense of well-being and is part of living a wellness lifestyle.
While World Mental Health Day is a fantastic opportunity to share information and encourage healthy habits, extending this awareness into the other 364 days of the year is crucial.
